Vacation

August 6, 2010

Summer seems to take a victory lap during August, while we head for the mountains and the shore.

Follow the sun. Whichever destination you choose, summer vacation can be a time to regroup with family and friends, to recharge your batteries, relax with a good book or remember just why you work so hard.

The color of vacation. If vacation had a color it might be the yellow of corn on the cob or the red of a fresh picked tomato. If it had a face, it might be the face of a child who has just bobbed to the surface of a cold mountain lake.

The joy of work. While we celebrate summer, it isn’t so far fetched to also celebrate the work from which we are taking a break. John D. Rockefeller would celebrate his life in industry by flying a flag above his house to commemorate the day he first reported to work. Ernie Banks, the great Chicago Cubs shortstop, would cheerfully announce when he arrived at the ballpark, “It’s a great day for a baseball game … Let’s play two.”

The Summer of 1787. Our Federal Constitution was drafted during another Philadelphia summer that was remarkable for both its heat and humidity. Because the delegates knew their new nation would not survive without their labored deliberations, they persisted through rancorous debate, seemingly unbridgeable differences and extreme heat. Their reward would be the great nation they helped to create.

A sense of shared purpose. For as long as our economy continues along its present aimless path, many good men and women who go to our same polling places and salute our same flag will remain out of work. Like the founders before us, we will gain a bright future only through the hard work to which we dedicate ourselves upon our return from summer vacation

Risk management. In the insurance and risk management solutions business, we realize that sometimes the greatest risk is to not take a risk. To accept the status quo and not dream big dreams when we come back refreshed from summer vacation is to accept meager reward. We are the heirs of men and women who risked everything to shake off the tyranny of an overweening empire. And they didn’t stop dreaming or working until their job was done.
