Security Tips - Don't risk having your summer fun ruined

July 16, 2010

Don’t risk having your summer fun ruined.

A day at the beach. Have you ever left your car keys behind when going into the water? In all likelihood, you thought ahead by leaving your valuables stored safely in your car. But consider this: The remote control locking that is so convenient for you can be just as convenient for thieves. If given enough time, they can use the remote to locate both your car and your valuables. What is the solution? Bring the key but leave the remote in the glove compartment. Even then, keep the bag in which you store your key in clear sight.

Mobile device security. You wouldn’t leave your hard drive unattended on the beach, by the pool or at a vacation spot. But that is what happens each time a mobile device is left unattended. These personal data centers include vast amounts of confidential information that must be protected from those who would seek to intrude upon your summer idyll.

Laptop security. Many vacation destinations offer wireless internet to their guests. And many diligent souls bring along their laptops to stay in touch with the office or get in a little work. Before leaving a laptop behind in a hotel room, attach a locking security cable to the Universal Security Slot (USS) and wrap the cable around an immovable object. For laptops that do not have a USS (approximately 80% of laptops have a USS slot), you can purchase adhesive connectors that mount directly to your laptop casing.

Fresh air policy. The breeze that passes through an open window is one of the joys of summer. Unfortunately, these open windows are also an open invitation to burglars. When leaving your house for any period of time, lock your windows. And, of course, set your alarm. During the night, set your windows to the point at which alarm sensors make contact.

Stop the paper. Nothing says “nobody home” to burglars more clearly than newspapers that have gathered at the foot of a driveway. If you absolutely can’t find the few minutes to suspend delivery either online or by phone, ask a trusted neighbor to collect the papers for you.
