We hear a great deal about the importance of personal narrative during political campaign seasons. Your company’s narrative matters all year round.
Once upon a time. From earliest childhood, stories are an essential part of what it means to be human. We listen to stories to better understand the world we live in, and we tell stories to help explain the world as we see it. What’s more, the stories we tell about ourselves and our companies help to determine how we are perceived.
Morning in America. When Ronald Reagan presented himself to voters as a presidential candidate in 1980, he told a story of optimism and faith. While Mr. Reagan did personify these qualities, he and his handlers made a conscious decision to tell this story of hope and renewal to the electorate. And this hopeful tale resonated all the way to the voting booth.
Change we can believe in. With these five words, Barack Obama also told a story that resonated with voters. While his was a different story, it led to the same fashionable address on Pennsylvania Avenue.
On the side of the angels. We know a man who founded a direct marketing agency. Each time he told his company’s story, he conveyed his belief that the good men and women in his shop worked shoulder to shoulder with the angels.
